Great sugi of Kayano

Great sugi of Kayano

It is a tree that is said to be 2300 years old, located in the precincts of Sugawara Shrine, about 2 km south of the spa town, and is also designated as a natural monument of the country.

The tree stands 54.8 m tall. At the base, it measures 11.5 m in circumference and 3.41 m across. At chest height, it is 9.6 m around and 3.0 m across.

In 1947, on the occasion of the second National Sports Festival of Japan (held in Ishikawa Prefecture), Emperor Shōwa (then known as Hirohito) visited the great sugi.
So it is called "天覧の大杉(Tenran-no-Osugi)", too.

In the tea house on the other side of the road there is a famous handmade Kusa-dango (closed in winter).
