Shirakawago is the name of village in Gifu Prefecture. It is famous for its historical farmhouses with unique architectural, the "Gasshou-style". These are located in steep mountains area.
The Gasshou-style are one of the most important farmhouse types in Japan, so it is designated as World Heritage Site.

One of the biggest Gasshou-style house in Shirakawago should be open to the public. You can see the first floor that was used as a living room, second floor that was used as a storage and how people lived in the house.
Furthermore, if you go to a observatory outside the village, you can see the whole village from there.
